Cable Ties

Nylon Fasteners Ltd's cable ties and wiring accessories are made from Nylon 66 which is a polyamide. Nylon's main characteristic is its elasticity, i.e. the ability for the cable tie to warp in response to stress and then resume it’s original shape when the applied force is removed. Raw nylon 66 is made by polymerising, melting. extruding and spinning the combined monomers adipic acid ((CH2)4(COOH)2.) and Hexamethylene diamine(H2N(CH2)6NH2 ). This polyamide also possesses excellent dielectric properties and features a very low rate of flame propagation: this is one of the main reasons underpinning the widespread use of polyamide in the electro-technical industry.

Our cable ties are especially durable . Cable ties can be vulnerable because of the relationship between nylon and atmospheric humidity and, more generally water. Too much moisture will result in excess elasticity, too little and they will become brittle. Through a process known as hygroscopy, Nylon 66 products absorb and expel water, adapting to ambient humidity levels by up to a maximum of 8.5%.

Temperature is the next most important factor to affect the reliability of a cable tie. Damage begins to take place at temperatures in excess of 60 °C and can, over long periods, cause irreversible deterioration to the rigidity and flexibility of the cable ties. At low temperatures, instead of causing the cable tie to be overly tensile, it can become brittle, causing the cable tie to snap.

We generally recommend black cable ties for outdoor use as UV radiation from sunlight can cause deterioration. It is also possible to add an extra 2% carbonate during the manufacturing process which drastically improves UV resistance, although this process does incur extra cost.

Cable ties can also be affected by the chemical nature of the environment in which they are used. During normal use, nylon proves extremely resistant to chemical attack and is especially impervious to hydrocarbon esters, ketones and ethers; however nylon can absorb a certain quantity of hydrocarbons and small percentages of water that can lead to dimensional changes. Other solvents, such as strong mineral acids, metal salts and formic acid effect nylon particularly badly, even at ambient temperature. When choosing nylon for a specific use, it is important to consider the nature of solvents, temperature, and stress in order to foresee the relative effects on the actual cable ties themselves.

Fire is another critical factor that must be taken into account affecting the use of cable ties. It is always necessary to guarantee safety of persons and property and to limit fire risks, so attention is focusing on the analysis of the fire behaviour of various construction materials, including plastics. Plastic materials equipped with this certification are defined with flammability rating “self-extinguishing to U.L. 94”. This certification is issued solely for raw materials. The flammability rating of nylon is U.L. 94 V2 (self-extinguishing). Please note that not all polyamides are self-extinguishing. Nylon Fasteners has chosen all its standard cable ties to be manufactured in 94 V2 self-extinguishing, we can also source cable ties manufactured in 94-V0, which has a higher flammability rating.

The passage of time can compromise the durability of a cable tie. This can be defined as the duration of the application under a given load. In this area, plastics display an additional criticality with respect to other construction materials due to a physical phenomenon known as “creep”, i.e. the tendency to deform permanently in response to stress.

Cable ties are also amazingly durable as they are resistant to many types of alkalis, oils, greases, fuels and detergents. You can buy special cable ties made from heat-resistant (or even flame-retardant) nylon, weather resistant nylon (which uses 2% added carbon) or stainless steel for flameproof applications. These days, it is commonly made with nylon teeth (as opposed to the rust-prone steel ones of old) and they are pretty much as strong as you want them to be, with a vast range of widths offering a similar range of strength. If you want long instead of strong, there's always a huge range of lengths to choose from, to get the right bundling diameter for you.

Cable ties can be used for tamper-evident applications and can be made to military specification, manufactured with a releasable tooth (which means they can be reused), they can be used by the Police as handcuffs (although this practice is slowly dying out) and automotive cable ties can be made with PPAP documentation. Although they're generally used as a permanent fixture, it's easy enough to open a fastened cable tie with a small screw driver or a pair of pliers, to cut either the band or the ratchet.
