A wee bit more forex info for importers of cable ties
March 16th, 2011The Bank of England held interest rates at a record low of 0.5% last week as expected. This still produced a mild negative reaction for Sterling as some investors were holding the Pound in the hope of a surprise hike. When it didn’t come they sold Sterling. We will have to await the minutes of the BoE meeting (due for release next Wednesday morning) to see how the nine member committee voted. The chancellor is also due to present the 2011 budget on the same day.
There has been relatively little in the way of key economic data so far this week. Wage growth data in the UK this morning was exactly in line with expectations, showing 2.2% annual growth. A higher figure would have added pressure to the BoE to increase interest rates. To date, wage inflation has remained tame, giving the bank at least one excuse to keep rates at record lows.
In the US the Federal Reserve voted unanimously to keep interest rates and quantitative easing unchanged yesterday, reasoning that even with a sharp rise in oil prices, inflation has remained “subdued”. The Fed’s dual mandate is full employment and price stability. Prices appear to be stable, but employment remains at long term highs of nearly 9%. Not surprising then that the Fed’ is giving the economy more breathing space.
The technical outlook is mixed. Sterling has been steadily making higher highs every few weeks, but March to date has seen us move into a holding pattern between 1.60 and 1.63. We would become more concerned if the market makes a daily close below 1.60.

Last week’s big inflation numbers confirmed that prices in the UK are rising at more than twice the Bank of England’s target inflation rate of 2%. Traders have been buying Sterling in expectation of a near term interest rate hike, and markets were looking for further guidance from the BoE’s quarterly inflation report last Wednesday. Governor Mervyn King did indicate a likely “gradual” rise in rates, but wasn’t quite as hawkish as some hoped, commenting in his letter to the chancellor that “there is a great deal of uncertainty about the medium term outlook for inflation”. The Bank of Canada is the only G7 central bank to raise rates so far this cycle, but bets are mounting that the Bank of England will be next. The rather mild mannered inflation report caused Sterling to tumble as short term traders trimmed positions, but the firm underlying bid returned toward the end of the week as the dust settled and investors adopted a medium term view that rates will have to rise.
Sterling made further progress on Friday after retail sales figures showed a 1.9% rise on the month, making the yearly rise a healthy 5.3%. Yesterday’s Rightmove house price survey started the week on a positive footing as it indicated a 3.1% price rise on the month, or 0.3% on the year.
Sterling was also able to capitalise on some weak US data last week. Industrial production in January contracted by 0.1% against expectations of 0.7% growth. The Consumer Price Index was up 1.6% year on year, in line with expectations, and contrasting sharply with the UK’s equivalent which gave a reading of 4.0%. US jobless claims were slightly higher than expected. On balance it’s not hard to see why Sterling won the week.
